We are introducing legislation to honor the Commonwealth and the Nation’s distinguished Medal of Honor recipients by designating the entirety of Pennsylvania’s 45-mile portion of U.S. Highway 20 as the “Pennsylvania and National Medal of Honor Highway”.
In the past, we introduced legislation, which was signed into law, to designate the entire stretch of U.S. Highway 20 as the “Pennsylvania Medal of Honor Highway”. We are grateful that the legislature was willing to honor the individuals from Pennsylvania who have fought with valor, risked their lives, and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
In the time since section of U.S. Highway 20 in Pennsylvania was designated as the “Pennsylvania Medal of Honor Highway,” every single legislature and governor in all twelve states along U.S. Highway 20 have designated their state Medal of Honor Highways covering 100% of the 3,365-miles in length, stretching from Boston, Massachusetts to Newport, Oregon.
More recently, on December 17th, 2024, U.S. Highway 20 was designated by the federal government as the “National Medal of Honor Highway”. This designation by the federal government honors the service and sacrifice of current Medal of Honor recipients and future Medal of Honor recipients across the United States, and in our Commonwealth.
Pennsylvania has a long and rich history of service, with Medal of Honor recipients serving in 14 wars, from the Civil War to the Iraq War, over a span of 145 years. By re-designating the stretch of U.S. Highway 20 in Pennsylvania as the “Pennsylvania and National Medal of Honor Highway” we are honoring the gallantry, intrepidity, service, and sacrifice of Medal of Honor recipients in the Commonwealth, and across the United States. These distinct and courageous individuals have fought for Pennsylvania, and for our nation, the least we could do is offer an appropriate designation befitting their service and sacrifice.
Please join us in support of this important legislation to honor the current and future Medal of Honor recipients in the Commonwealth and across the Nation.
Sincerely,
Parke Wentling, 7th Legislative District
Pat Harkins, 1st Legislative District
Brad Roae, 6th Legislative District
Ryan Bizzarro, 3rd Legislative District
