At least 90% of teachers nationwide spend money out of their own pockets on supplies and equipment for their classrooms. This includes reading libraries, educational software, pencils, paper, and even snacks for kids who may not have enough to eat at home. Studies show that, on average, teachers spend $800 or more of their own money per year to make sure our children have all the tools they need to succeed.

At the federal level, teachers can claim a tax deduction for the purchase of unreimbursed classroom supplies. We believe it is time that Pennsylvania joins this effort. That is why we will soon be introducing legislation that would provide a $100 refundable tax credit to teachers who spent their own money on classroom supplies and equipment. Our tax credit proposal would be administered separately from the federal deduction to ensure Pennsylvania teachers always have this option available to them.

Please join us in taking this step toward lowering the cost of being an educator and showing these hardworking, caring individuals our appreciation.
