In the near future, I will introduce a resolution to celebrate the Curtis Institute of Music’s 100th anniversary and its many contributions to our Commonwealth’s culture and history. A world-class conservatory located in the heart of Philadelphia, the Curtis Institue of Music has cultivated and refined generations of peerless musicians, including Leonard Bernstein, Yuja Wang, and Samuel Barber. Founded in 1924 by Mary Louise Curtis Bok, Curtis has opened its doors to young musicians across the world with a revolutionary ethos at its core: a quality music education should be available to those with talent and drive, regardless of means and without financial barriers.
Since 1928, every student who attended the Curtis Institute has done so tuition-free. Curtis has invested in its students, allowing them to advance their skills and hone their crafts . From this investment, Curtis musicians have continued onward to bestow on the world a century of music that has touched and enriched innumerable lives, extending the bounds of human connection and capacity. These artists have led, founded, and bolstered Philadelphia’s illustrious musical institutions, including its Orchestra, Chamber Music Society, Opera Company, and Woodwind Quintet. Beyond the bounds of our city, commonwealth, and country, Curtis alumni grace the world’s premier musical ensembles, orchestras, and opera houses, forging new frontiers in composition and performance.
In the century since its founding, more than 4,400 students have called Curtis home. The school continues to embrace Mary Louise Curtis Bok’s vision of a musical family that is equitable, worldwide, and united in its love for the craft. Their example is a beacon to music lovers everywhere and for those who believe in the possibilities wrought from talent and determination. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.
