In recognition of the vital role newspapers play in informing the public, strengthening communities, and holding power to account, I am introducing a resolution to recognize October 5–11, 2025, as “National Newspaper Week” in Pennsylvania.

Our nation’s founders understood that a strong and enduring republic relies on an informed and engaged citizenry. Central to this vision and fundamental to any healthy democracy is the public access to reliable, timely information about government, communities, the nation, and the world.

The right to free speech and a free press, as enshrined in the First Amendment, remains one of the most cherished principles upon which both Pennsylvania and our nation have flourished. Pennsylvania holds a special place in the history of American journalism, notably through the publication of the Pennsylvania Gazette by Founding Father Benjamin Franklin, an early newspaper that played a pivotal role in shaping the political and cultural landscape of the American colonies.

Over the centuries, Pennsylvania’s newspapers have continually evolved to meet the changing needs of a diverse and dynamic population. Even in today’s digital and social media landscape, our Commonwealth’s newspaper industry remains a vital pillar of our democracy, upholding the highest standards of journalism: accuracy, fairness, integrity, independence, and an unwavering commitment to public service.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to celebrate our Commonwealth’s newspaper industry and to honor the journalists, editors, reporters, and all those who help bring news and newspapers to communities across Pennsylvania.
