Born in 1469, Guru Nanak was the founder of Sikhism and its first Guru. A transformative reformer, he rejected the caste system and affirmed the equal dignity of all people, regardless of religion or gender. His teachings, which arose in response to social injustice and religious intolerance, shaped a tradition centered around peace, equality, and fraternity; values that remain socially significant centuries after his death in 1539. To recognize Guru Nanak and the Sikh community, I will be introducing a resolution designating November 5, 2025, as “Guru Nanak Day” in Pennsylvania and commemorating the 556th anniversary of Guru Nanak’s birth.

Pennsylvania’s strength has long been enriched by the diversity of its residents and the climate of social tolerance and intellectual pluralism they foster. The Sikh community has exemplified this spirit through their numerous contributions to the economic, civic, and cultural life of our communities. Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution recognizing Guru Nanak’s enduring legacy and the valuable contributions of the Sikh community to our Commonwealth.
