Domestic violence is a widespread problem in the United States. Studies have revealed that a substantial number of people have been the victim of intimate partner violence in their lifetime. In the most horrifying cases, domestic violence can result in death. Approximately 1,500 domestic-violence related deaths are estimated to have occurred in Pennsylvanian in the last 10 years, but exact numbers are difficult to determine because our state lacks a system that accurately tracks these events. Without accurate, formal tracking, we cannot assess the true scope of lethal domestic violence or take appropriate action to reduce it.

That is why I plan on introducing legislation that will establish a system that records and compiles information on deaths that occur as a result of domestic violence.

Armed with accurate information and standardized reports, policymakers, stakeholders, and organizations dedicated to ending domestic violence can better tailor their actions to the circumstances and communities in which these deaths occur.

Without accurate information, every attempt at reducing domestic violence deaths is a shot in the dark. Together, we can all work to avoid these horrific outcomes. I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
