This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to enhance training requirements for school personnel regarding seizure recognition and related first aid. Starting with the 2025-2026 school year and every two years thereafter, school nurses and other professional employees who have direct contact with students are mandated to complete a Department of Health-approved course on seizure management. This training will cover seizure recognition, the development of a seizure action plan, and related first aid procedures.
Additionally, the bill includes a provision that clarifies that it does not create or expand civil liability for school entities or their employees when providing treatment to students experiencing seizures, as long as the treatment is consistent with the school's adopted policy. The existing civil immunity laws for emergency response providers and school employees will apply in these situations. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
