For many of our volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps, fundraising is a critical source of revenue. Therefore, participating in fundraising activities often becomes part of a volunteer firefighter’s or emergency medical technician’s duties to ensure the department can continue to serve their community.

The Pennsylvania Workers’ Compensation Act currently covers volunteer firefighters and EMTs who are injured while responding to emergencies or performing other important duties. Moreover, courts have ruled in favor of workers’ compensation claims, relying on catch-all language in the act concerning fire and EMS activities authorized by the municipality. However, it does not expressly cover these volunteers if they are injured while engaged in a fundraising activity.

Without fundraising, many of our volunteer fire departments and ambulance corps would struggle to perform their lifesaving services for their communities. These volunteers shouldn’t have to worry about how they’ll support themselves and their families because they were injured while trying to support their community.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation that will ensure they are covered by engaging in these essential activities for their organization.
