In the near future, we will be offering a resolution recognizing Wednesday, September 10, 2025, as World Suicide Prevention Day in Pennsylvania.

Suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death in the United States and globally, suicide is among the top 20 leading causes of death for people of all ages. Every year, it is estimated to be responsible for over 720,000 deaths. Furthermore, survivors of suicide are 25 times more likely to commit a suicidal act in the future, which underscores why continued prevention of suicide is so important.

Each year, on September 10th, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) and the World Health Organization observe World Suicide Prevention Day. The purpose of this event is to discuss suicide and ways to prevent and treat it in hopes of saving lives. The triennial theme for 2024 through 2026 is “Changing the Narrative on Suicide” which strives to transform how we perceive this complex issue. Changing the narrative requires systemic change and shifting from a culture of silence and stigma to one of openness, understanding, and support. This means advocating for policies and legislation that prioritize mental health, increase access to care, and provide support for those in need.

As part of this campaign, IASP is issuing a call to action: “Start the Conversation.” This call encourages individuals, communities, organizations, and governments to engage in open, honest discussions about mental health and suicide. By starting conversations in Pennsylvania, we can break down barriers and raise awareness, check in with a friend or loved one, share personal stories and advocate for mental health resources and support services. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a more supportive and understanding Commonwealth.

Please join us in recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10, 2025.
