In the near future, we intend to introduce new legislation to expand property tax relief for Pennsylvania’s disabled veterans.

The Pennsylvania Disabled Veterans’ Real Estate Tax Exemption Program has provided property tax relief for hundreds of thousands of disabled veterans in our Commonwealth. Unfortunately, many brave men and women are denied relief because of the program’s archaic and outdated rules, which currently require that a veteran served in combat and do not provide benefits to surviving spouses for those that were killed in action, taken prisoner, or went missing in action.

Therefore, we will soon introduce companion legislation to House Bill 1257 to amend the Pennsylvania Constitution and submit the question to the voters of our commonwealth for their participation in this critical issue.

Our bill will do the following:
  • Remove the wartime clause and exempt all 100% disabled veterans from all property tax payments, regardless of whether their service was in combat.
  • Guarantees benefits for surviving spouses of eligible veterans, including those who were killed in action, taken prisoner, or went missing in action.
  • In addition, veterans with a VA rating of 50% or higher would be eligible for a proportional tax exemption (50% disability = 50% exemption, up to 90/90).
Veterans who have defended our nation and safeguarded the freedoms we cherish deserve meaningful support when they return home. Financial stability is crucial for veterans, especially those living with disabilities, and eliminating their property tax burden is one way we can provide this predictability and honor their service. This is a vital step in expanding access to property tax relief and ensuring no eligible veteran or surviving spouse is left behind.
