In the near future, we plan to introduce legislation that would enhance penalties for criminal offenses committed against federal immigration enforcement officers and agents operating within Pennsylvania. This legislation would ensure that those who assault, threaten, or obstruct federal immigration enforcement personnel face appropriate state-level consequences that reflect the severity of these crimes.

Federal immigration enforcement officers face increasing threats and violence while carrying out their lawful duties. These brave men and women risk their safety daily to enforce immigration laws and protect our communities from criminal elements. Recent incidents across the nation demonstrate an alarming escalation in violence directed at immigration enforcement personnel, making enhanced protective measures both necessary and urgent.

The need for this legislation stems from the disturbing pattern of violence against federal immigration enforcement officers nationwide. Just to name a few instances:

- Los Angeles, California (June 2025): Over 1,000 rioters surrounded a federal law enforcement building and assaulted ICE law enforcement officers, slashed tires, defaced buildings, and taxpayer funded property.

- Nebraska (June 2025): An illegal alien from Honduras brandished a weapon and assaulted federal agents and officers who were doing their job. This incident occurred during a lawful worksite enforcement operation.

- Multi-State Protest Violence: Similar confrontations have occurred in multiple cities across the country, with thousands of people nationwide showing up at protests and rallies opposing ICE raids as unrest grows.

Federal immigration enforcement officers are tasked with apprehending individuals who pose threats to public safety. According to recent ICE data, during FY 2024, ICE Enforcement and Removal Officers (ERO)  arrested 3,032 criminals and assisted with 3,012 criminal indictments and 3,014 criminal convictions for violations of the U.S. Code. These officers are pursuing dangerous criminals, including those involved in violent crimes, drug trafficking, and other serious offenses.

When these officers are attacked, threatened, or obstructed in the performance of their duties, it directly undermines public safety efforts.

The safety of federal immigration enforcement officers directly impacts the safety of Pennsylvania communities. These officers work to remove dangerous criminals from our neighborhoods, and they deserve our protection and support. The recent surge in violence against these officers demands immediate legislative action.

Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation that will protect this critical public safety function.
