Under Pennsylvania law, schools are required to annually report demographic information to the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) regarding students participating in school athletic programs. This data helps determine whether all students have equal access to athletic opportunities within our schools and what actions may be needed to meet federal requirements. Although this information is available online, many constituents have expressed concerns that this data is hard to access and understand, making it difficult to evaluate their school’s performance in complying with Title IX.

My legislation will amend the Public School Code to expand upon the existing reporting requirements to increase the transparency and visibility of collected information. In addition to the demographic information already being reported to PDE, schools would have to perform an annual evaluation of their compliance with federal Title IX requirements. From these evaluations and the collected data, PDE would be required to create a report card system that clearly summarizes each school’s performance in meeting Title IX requirements on an A-F letter scale. Via the report card, parents, community members and legislators will be better able to understand how local schools are providing equitable athletic opportunities to students.

Please join me in supporting this legislation which will help ensure equal access to athletic opportunities throughout Pennsylvania.
