In the near future we plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the individuals that help our constituents recover their unclaimed property are held to the highest standards.

Our legislation will amend the Unclaimed Property program to require individuals that register as finders with the department to complete a national criminal history background check, and add burglary, robbery, bribery, and obstructing governmental operations to the list of offences that would disqualify an individual from being approved as a registered finder.

Additionally, our legislation would make the following changes. First it will require a finder to notify property owners that they can submit a claim directly through the State Treasurer free of charge. Next it requires that the Department of Revenue make a sample agreement available online for transparency. Lastly, it would extend the renewal period from two to five years.

Please join us in sponsoring these important changes to our unclaimed property process which will ensure that the individuals we trust to help find and recover unclaimed property are held to the highest standards.
