Tow trucks come when we need assistance on the road and play an important role in keeping our roads clear and safe. These operators often operate large vehicles that are necessary to perform the work they do, which can pose a large hazard in the event of an incident. Currently, the law does not require tow trucks to have a commercial insurance policy, and some operators have insufficient insurance for the risk involved in their work. When the worst happens, those involved in an accident with an underinsured tow truck can face trouble having their vehicle repaired or their medical bills covered.

To address this issue, I plan to introduce legislation that would require tow trucks to maintain at least $750,000 in insurance for property and bodily injury. My legislation would also raise the minimum for other motor carriers to the same amount, which has not been updated since 2015.

Many tow truck operators and motor carriers already carry this much insurance, or more, to meet federal requirements that allow them to operate across state lines, and setting Pennsylvania’s requirements at the same rate will help clarify how much insurance these operators need to be on the road. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
