The bill amends Section 7312(h) of Title 35 of the Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes, which pertains to the organization of emergency communications within the Commonwealth. It introduces new provisions that require the agency to maintain an integrated communications capability for disseminating weather advisories, river forecasts, and emergency preparedness functions across all areas and counties. The agency is tasked with coordinating emergency communication systems and sharing information among various entities, including the National Weather Service, local emergency management coordinators, and the Pennsylvania State Police.
Additionally, the bill establishes a sole Statewide telephone number for reporting incidents related to radioactive and hazardous materials, as well as other disaster emergencies. It also mandates the creation of a dedicated Statewide telephone number for offices of the legislative branch to communicate directly with the agency during weather emergencies. These changes aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency communication and response in Pennsylvania. The act is set to take effect in 60 days.
