This bill amends the Public School Code of 1949 to introduce a new section focused on human trafficking awareness and prevention in Pennsylvania's educational system. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, the Department of Education is required to develop a continuing professional education program that addresses various aspects of human trafficking, including relevant laws, statistics, methods of coercion used by traffickers, and identification of potential victims. The program will be developed in consultation with the Office of Attorney General, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency's Office of Victims' Services, and a human trafficking organization.
Professional educators who are required to complete continuing education will need to finish this new program, which will be at least one hour long and may be delivered online. Upon completion, educators will receive credit towards their continuing professional education requirements. The bill also defines key terms related to human trafficking and outlines the responsibilities of the Department of Education in implementing this program. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
