The aorta is the largest artery in the body, connects to the heart, and carries oxygenated blood to supply the body. Sadly, there are multiple aortic diseases and conditions, including aortic stenosis, traumatic aortic ruptures, congenital and hereditary aortic defects like Marfan Syndrome, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. Those most at risk are men over the age of 50, particularly those who use tobacco. Other risk factors include a family history of the conditions, genetic predispositions, high cholesterol and blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.

However, there are many preventative measures and treatments that people can pursue to reduce their risk, including having regular screenings, avoiding tobacco products, and living a healthy lifestyle. For this reason, I will introduce a resolution to designate September 19, 2025, as “Aortic Disease Awareness Day” to raise awareness of these conditions and the steps that can be taken to avoid these serious medical conditions.

I want to remind older Pennsylvanians who are at risk of abdominal aortic aneurism that Medicare Part B will cover one aortic ultrasound screening if an individual has a family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms, or is a man age 65 to 75 who has smoked at least 100 cigarettes in his lifetime.

Please join me in bringing attention to these deadly aortic conditions so that individuals at risk may get the appropriate preventative care before it is too late.
