In the near future, I will introduce two bills to support nursing parents by establishing lactation rooms in government buildings across Pennsylvania.

The first bill will focus specifically on county court buildings throughout the Commonwealth. The availability of designated lactation spaces is crucial for supporting nursing parents, including those who work in the court system or are participating in legal proceedings. These spaces ensure that individuals can fulfill their civic or professional duties without compromising their health or that of their infants.

Many new parents face significant barriers when trying to breastfeed or express milk in public spaces, especially in environments like courthouses that may lack appropriate accommodations. By providing lactation rooms, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment that allows parents to meet their legal obligations while caring for their children’s needs.

The second bill will expand this requirement to all government buildings across the Commonwealth. Whether accessing services at a state agency, attending a public hearing, or simply reporting to work, nursing parents should not be forced to choose between their responsibilities and their family’s well-being. Ensuring consistent access to safe, clean, and private lactation spaces in all government facilities reflects or commitment to equitable and family-friendly public service.

Both bills will align with public health recommendations that emphasize the benefits of breastfeeding for parents and children, alike. Access to lactation facilities can help reduce anxiety and stress for parents who might otherwise struggle to find a private space.

These efforts represent a small but significant investment in health, dignity, and accessibility. By joining states that have already implemented similar measures, Pennsylvania can lead the way in supporting nursing families in public spaces.

Please join me in supporting these important pieces of legislation to make our public spaces more accommodating, inclusive, and supportive for all.
