Many individuals across the United States struggle to pay unexpected medical bills and when left unpaid, these bills accrue interests often at high rates when referred to collection agencies. Neither Pennsylvania nor federal law specifically caps interest rates on medical debt.

For these reasons, I will be introducing legislation that would cap the amount of interest that can be applied to medical debt to a limit of 6%. This cap is in line with Pennsylvania’s Usury Law that limits interest on loans to be no more than 6%. The legislation has the goal of helping to ease the burden of medical debt repayment that many Pennsylvanians face.

Positive health outcomes rely on an individual’s ability to access health care and medical debt often deters individuals from continuing to seek medical care. We need to make it easier for more Pennsylvanians to access and pay for quality health care.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation that would limit the interest that can be charged on medical debt in Pennsylvania.
