The bill amends the Medical Practice Act of 1985 to include new definitions and provisions related to genetic counseling. A new definition for "genetic test" is added, which encompasses various analyses such as the examination of DNA and RNA, biochemical tests for gene products, and microscopic chromosome analysis. Additionally, the scope of practice for genetic counselors is expanded to allow them to identify, order, and coordinate genetic tests, as well as provide written documentation for clients and referring providers, while maintaining this documentation in the client's medical records.

Furthermore, the bill clarifies that genetic counselors are not authorized to diagnose, manage, or treat any genetic diseases or conditions. The amendments also replace the term "laboratory tests" with "genetic tests" and introduce the term "referring providers" to enhance the clarity of the genetic counseling process. The act is set to take effect 60 days after its passage.
