This bill amends the Osteopathic Medical Practice Act to include new definitions and clarify the scope of practice for genetic counselors in Pennsylvania. A new definition for "genetic test" is added, which encompasses various analyses, including the examination of DNA and RNA, biochemical tests for gene products, and microscopic chromosome analysis. This addition aims to provide a clearer understanding of the types of genetic assessments that may be involved in the practice of genetic counseling.
Furthermore, the bill modifies the responsibilities of genetic counselors by allowing them to "order" genetic tests and coordinate genetic assessments, replacing the previous language that referred to "laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies." It also emphasizes the importance of providing written documentation for families and referring providers, while ensuring that genetic counselors do not have the authority to diagnose or treat genetic diseases. The changes are set to take effect 60 days after the bill's passage.
