Soon, I will introduce legislation to expand the Waste Tire Recycling Act of 1996 to ensure the continued cleanup of scrap tires.

Since that law was passed, more than 31 million tires have been cleaned up – 97% of
ALL scrap tires across Pennsylvania. Once recycled, these tires can serve a variety of purposes including rubber mulch for playgrounds, tire derived aggregate for landslide repair and the building of retaining walls, and crumb rubber which can be used for rubberized asphalt, artificial turf, or rubber mats.

We’ve made considerable progress, but more needs to be done to clean up our remaining scrap tires, whether it’s one or two along the roadside or a small pile in an abandoned site.

This legislation will ensure that tires which are brought to a tire sale or repair business must remain at the business. These are the most likely tires to be abandoned, littering our landscape as breeding grounds for mosquitoes and creating significant fire hazards.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
