Automated Red Light Enforcement (ARLE) is a camera and sensor system that automatically monitors and records vehicles at intersections where data shows red light running has been an issue. In 2022, 1,149 people were killed and over 107,000 were injured in crashes that involved red light running according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Since it is impossible for law enforcement to be at every intersection, cameras are a great alternative to catch violators and discourage red light running. In fact, an IIHS study found that cameras have reduced the fatal red light running crash rate in large cities by 21%.

Currently, Pennsylvania law allows for 17 municipalities to implement ARLE which includes the City of Pittsburgh. However, no other municipalities in Allegheny County meet the criteria. Automated Red Light Enforcement can and should be expanded to potentially save more lives which is why I will be introducing legislation that would amend the Pennsylvania Vehicle Code to also include Counties of the Second Class.

I hope you will join me in expanding the ARLE system to improve the safety for both drivers and pedestrians in Allegheny County.
