A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the week of April 14 through 18, 2025, as "Local
2 Government Week" and April 16, 2025, as "Local Government
3 Day" in Pennsylvania.
4 WHEREAS, Local government in Pennsylvania is comprised of
5 more than 4,800 individual units which include the governmental
6 bodies of 67 counties, more than 50 cities, nearly 100 townships
7 of the first class, nearly 1,500 townships of the second class,
8 more than 950 boroughs, one incorporated town, 500 school
9 districts and more than 1,700 authorities; and
10 WHEREAS, More than 12 million residents of this Commonwealth
11 rely on the services and facilities provided by local
12 government, ranging from the special purpose functions of
13 counties, school districts and municipal authorities in the
14 areas of judicial administration, social welfare, education and
15 provision of water and sewer services to the more general
16 purpose functions of cities, boroughs, towns and townships,
17 including maintenance of roads and streets, police, fire, and
18 EMS protection and enforcement of ordinances and land use
1 controls; and
2 WHEREAS, Local government is comprised of thousands of
3 hardworking resident officials, many of whom serve without
4 reward and hold local government offices; and
5 WHEREAS, Local government also employs thousands of dedicated
6 staff members who carry out the directives of the local elected
7 officials and who are assisted by thousands of tireless
8 volunteers who serve on various local boards and commissions;
9 and
10 WHEREAS, Residents of this Commonwealth rely upon the
11 dedication of local officials in meeting many of the residents'
12 most fundamental needs in nearly all facets of daily living; and
13 WHEREAS, The success of our local officials is a key element
14 in the overall quality of life in this Commonwealth; and
15 WHEREAS, Local government is foundational to our political
16 system; and
17 WHEREAS, It is fitting that each year in this Commonwealth,
18 one week is set aside as "Local Government Week" and one day as
19 "Local Government Day"; and
20 WHEREAS, "Local Government Week" and "Local Government Day"
21 focus attention on the need for strong, independent and active
22 local government in this Commonwealth and recognize the valuable
23 contributions made by residents serving their communities;
24 therefore be it
25 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of April 14
26 through 18, 2025, as "Local Government Week" and April 16, 2025,
27 as "Local Government Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
28 RESOLVED, That the Senate commend and thank the local
29 officials of this Commonwealth for their labor as the unsung
30 heroes of government.
