The Hemlock Varnish Shelf is a native mushroom closely associated with our State tree, the Eastern Hemlock, widely distributed throughout forests across the state, and often visible year-round. Though valued largely for its medicinal properties, this mushroom, like other fungi, contributes to a healthy ecosystem and serves as a natural protection against carbon emissions.

In an effort to recognize the importance of mushrooms and fungi, I will soon be introducing legislation to designate the Hemlock Varnish Shelf as the official state mushroom.

Our State symbols embody the unique qualities of Pennsylvania. I think it is essential that we recognize the importance of fungi and mushrooms by designating a state mushroom. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
