In the coming days, we will be introducing a resolution that recognizes April 2025 as “Fair Housing Month” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
Fifty-seven years ago, the Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson. The Fair Housing Act prevents discrimination in the sale, rental, or financing of housing based on race, color, sex, familiar status, religious creed, ancestry, age, national origin, handicap, or disability. In Pennsylvania, residents are still fighting for fair housing on the basis of gender, marital status, and sexual orientation; and until these basic needs are protected, people will be legally discriminated against when trying to find a home in the Commonwealth. It is our shared duty to ensure that every person has equitable access to all the opportunities that our communities provide regardless of where they live. We must recognize that housing is both a critical human need and a fundamental right, and until we can guarantee affordable, accessible, and clean housing to all Pennsylvanians, that goal cannot be reached.
Please join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution as we continue to fight for safe, fair, and equitable housing for all.
