Energy demand is increasing in Pennsylvania, causing an upward pressure on price and exacerbating environmental problems including climate change.  One source of this increased demand is cryptocurrency mining, which uses a tremendous amount of electricity.  Crypto mining operations have grown significantly in Pennsylvania.  Unfortunately, we don’t know where all of these “mines” are or the details of their operations.
Soon, I will be introducing legislation that establishes reporting requirements for cryptocurrency mining operations.  Crypto mining operators would be required to report to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) information such as their mining locations, the amount of energy consumed, the source of electric supply, water usage, and any other information deemed necessary by DEP.  The bill would also require DEP to conduct an impact study on cryptocurrency mining in Pennsylvania.
This was formerly HB 1476 of last session.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation.
