Community energy is a concept that most agree would be beneficial for many Pennsylvania families. Clean, renewable energy sources, like solar, geothermal and renewable natural gas help to reduce utility costs and lower the output on the electricity grid. However, many residents cannot enjoy those benefits for a myriad of reasons.
So, in comes Community Energy, which would provide a mechanism for targeted clean, renewable energy projects for communities that want them. People can subscribe, they save money and reap the grid benefits. It is a win-win-win scenario!
I will soon be introducing legislation that will set a framework for communities to reap the benefits of clean, renewable energy more easily, but not on the backs of those ratepayers who choose not to opt in.
It would allow for the creation, financing, accessibility and operation of community renewable energy generating facilities; encourage development of community energy programs which enable robust participation; and encourage participation in programs which will benefit low to moderate income customers and their communities.
Everyone deserves to have access to and utilize clean, renewable energy. I hope you’ll join me.
