Pennsylvania’s specialized courts play a critical role in addressing substance use disorders, mental health challenges, and other underlying issues that frequently contribute to criminal behavior. These courts provide structured, treatment-focused alternatives to incarceration, helping participants rehabilitate and reintegrate into our communities.
In the near future, we will be introducing legislation to rename “problem-solving courts” as “treatment courts” in Title 42 – a more accurate reflection of their rehabilitative mission. This change applies to veterans courts, drug courts, mental health courts, DUI courts, and other specialized programs. This bill improves statewide coordination by enabling the Supreme Court to support local treatment courts, secure funding, and provide technical assistance.
By strengthening Pennsylvania’s commitment to rehabilitation, this legislation will improve outcomes for participants, reduce recidivism, and enhance public safety. Please join us in co-sponsoring this effort to ensure our justice system provides a pathway to healing, stability, and second chances.
