In the near future, I plan to introduce legislation that would change the name of the "Department of Environmental Protection" to the "Department of Environmental Services."  Pennsylvania’s Department of Environmental Protection clearly has a culture problem as it seems that the Department often sees themselves as being a necessary barrier to the expansion of business and development in PA. A shift in thinking is necessary and changing the name of the Department is a good start down this road.

While protecting the environment is important, that is only one of many services and duties of the Department. This name change highlights the other environmental services the Department provides including permitting, advancing certain human health and safety measures, coordinating with Federal agencies and other state agencies and supporting economic and energy development. The name “Department of Environmental Services” also emphasizes that the Department exists as a public service and valuable resource to the people of the Commonwealth and not as a hinderance to our economy.

This name change will have no effect on the jurisdiction or enforcement obligations of the department.  Please join me in establishing the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Services.
