In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to repeal the statutory limit on the number of Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) Troopers.
The last major increase in the trooper complement occurred in 2002 and was capped at 4,741.  The population growth of Pennsylvania has increased by about 5% between 2002 and 2025.  Simply based on population, the complement of PSP troopers should have increased by approximately 237.  Instead, the General Assembly has only allowed for one increase since then, in 2023, by 100 additional troopers.
During this same time, the PSP responsibilities have only increased, by adding at least 65 additional municipalities to their coverage area, all the while adding at least 55 additional legislatively mandated activities.
Accordingly, my legislation will repeal the cap on the number of Pennsylvania State Police troopers, thereby allowing for the PSP to hire the appropriate number of troopers as they see fit.
A similar bill (
HB 1280) was
unanimously passed out of the House Judiciary Committee, full House of Representatives, and Senate Law and Justice Committee in the 2023-2024 legislative session.
Please consider joining me in ensuring that the Pennsylvania State Police have the necessary resources to keep our roadways and communities safe.
