In the near future, I will be introducing legislation that makes a simple change to existing law but could also save lives.

On May 22, 2022, Jon Gentile and his father were kayaking along the Delaware River when they passed over an unmarked dam.  The strong current pulled Jon under the dam, trapping him and taking his life.  Less than a year after this tragic accident two kayakers at the same dam became trapped but were fortunate to escape.

Pennsylvania is unfortunately a leader in dam related drownings.  My legislation would require a notice to be sent to the owners of run-of-the-river dams that would detail the requirements for safe marking practices to warn the public of the hazards that they pose.

Current law does not require that the location of run-of-the-river dams be posted publicly in the Commonwealth. My legislation would change that. Pennsylvanians need to know where these dams are before they go on the waterways.

The Department of Environmental Protection oversees run-of-the-river dams in the Commonwealth. DEP has been consulted, and they have been both supportive of this legislation and active on the issue since it has been brought to their attention. The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is heavily involved with run-of-the-river dams as well, and they are supportive of this legislation.

Please join me in cosponsoring this important legislation that would help Pennsylvanians to enjoy our natural resources without risking their lives.
