The Latino and Latina population in the United States has seen tremendous growth over the last two decades, with projections indicating that by 2050, these groups will represent over one-quarter of the U.S. population and one-third of the nation’s children. In Pennsylvania, the growth of the Latino community has outpaced the national rate by nearly 50%.

Despite this growth, the representation of these individuals in the medical field remains critically low. As of 2021, less than 4 percent of Pennsylvania’s physicians are Latino or Latina. This lack of diversity in the medical workforce leads to poorer health outcomes for Latino and Latina patients, as they face barriers such as limited access to healthcare facilities, as well as cultural and language differences. Research indicates that when physicians share the same ethnicity, language, and culture as their patients, care and health outcomes improve significantly.

In recognition of the importance of increasing and retaining stronger participation in the medical profession, we will soon introduce a resolution designating October 1, 2025, as Pennsylvania Latino and Latina Physician Day. This day will honor the vital role these Pennsylvanians play in the medical field and encourage future generations to pursue careers in medicine.

We hope you will join us in co-sponsoring this important resolution.
