On April 19, 1775, nearly 700 British soldiers marched from Boston to Concord in search of munitions stored by Massachusetts militiamen.  The soldiers were met by militia at Lexington in the early morning hours and were stopped by American “minutemen” at the Old North Bridge in Concord.  Fleeing back to Boston, the British soldiers met further resistance by militiamen in the town of Menotomy.

The Battles of Lexington and Concord – with their infamous “shot heard round the world” – and the Battle of Menotomy marked the beginning of the American Revolution.  These battles are commemorated every year as Patriots’ Day on the third Monday in April by our neighbors to the northeast in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Maine.  It is high time that we join together as one nation to recognize these important battles and our continued fight against tyranny.

For this reason, I plan to introduce a resolution urging Congress to make Patriots’ Day a federal holiday.  We can all agree that American heroes from the Revolution to the present day should never be forgotten.  Neither should our history.  Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution.  Your consideration is greatly appreciated.
