Our Commonwealth is trailing behind 31 States that already help students with the cost of exams associated with advanced courses, like Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate, and Cambridge International. As such, we have fewer students taking advanced courses and exams than the national average.

By funding the cost of these exams, Pennsylvania takes a step closer to achieving equity in education. It will allow students to pursue more rigorous coursework that will develop their scholastic talents. Making the exams more affordable for students will develop a college and work-force ready body of students, while providing impactful savings.

In addition, an obstacle facing school districts in providing advanced courses, is the cost of training educators. The legislation would provide school districts with the opportunity to apply for funds that will train educators. To be eligible for funding, a school district must commit to providing advanced courses that the educator is trained in for at least three years. The training of these educators will also count toward their professional development requirements.

The use of advanced courses in our high schools increases the academic rigor in our schools for our students while improving the quality of instruction by those educators who will be teaching both regular and rigorous courses.

Please join us in guaranteeing that all students will have the opportunity to get the best education that can be provided.
