Throughout history, many influential figures have shaped our nation, yet some remain overlooked despite their profound contributions. Bayard Rustin is one such individual—a man whose dedication to justice, equality, and nonviolence transformed the Civil Rights Movement and, ultimately, our society.
A close advisor to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rustin played a pivotal role in making nonviolent resistance a foundational principle of the Civil Rights Movement. He was the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, one of the most significant demonstrations in our nation's history. Additionally, Rustin co-founded the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and participated in the Journey of Reconciliation, an early effort to challenge segregation in interstate travel. This action later served as a model for the Freedom Rides of 1961, further advancing civil rights in the United States.
Beyond his contributions to racial justice, Bayard Rustin was also a staunch advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, using his voice and platform to champion equality at a time when it was deeply unpopular to do so. As a gay, Black man, Rustin faced adversity on multiple fronts, yet he remained steadfast in his pursuit of justice for all people.
Our world today is a direct result of Rustin’s activism, and while his impact is undeniable, his name is too often forgotten in discussions of history. To ensure his legacy is properly honored, we are introducing a resolution to designate March 17, 2025, as "Bayard Rustin Day" in Pennsylvania. By recognizing this day, we reaffirm our commitment to the values of equality, justice, and nonviolence that Rustin so passionately upheld.
We invite you to join us in this effort to honor Bayard Rustin’s legacy by co-sponsoring this resolution.
