Pennsylvania faces a critical healthcare labor shortage, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Reports estimate the state will be short 300,000 healthcare workers by 2026, including over 20,000 nurses. Despite the Pennsylvania Targeted Industry Program (PA-TIP) offering scholarships for high-need fields, it currently only applies to education programs two years or shorter in length. This limitation excludes essential professions like nursing and other four-year healthcare programs, leaving the state ill-equipped to meet future demands.

My legislation will expand PA-TIP to include four-year pre-Physician Assistant programs and bachelor’s degree programs in Nursing, Public Health, and Community Health. By broadening eligibility for financial assistance, we can encourage more individuals to pursue these vital careers and strengthen healthcare services statewide.

This legislation aims to ensure all Pennsylvanians, whether in urban centers or rural areas, have access to a robust and sustainable healthcare system. Supporting future healthcare workers not only addresses immediate labor shortages but also safeguards public health for years to come.

Pennsylvania’s healthcare workforce is in crisis, and expanding PA-TIP is a practical, forward-looking solution. Please join me in supporting this legislation to equip our communities with the healthcare professionals they desperately need.
