In the near future, I will be introducing legislation to protect widowed individuals from insurance rate increases.

Insurance rates can fluctuate and vary depending on several factors, such as driving records, credit score, bundling, or marital status. Typically, insurance companies charge different rates for different marital status, be that single and never married, divorced, married, or widowed. However, when losing a loved one and becoming a widow, an individual may be shifted into another category. This sudden change is often accompanied by an increase that is paid by the individual that has now found themselves a widow. I believe that it is unjust and cruel for insurance companies to enforce an increase due to simply becoming a widow.

To that end, my legislation keeps a widowed individual in the same category as those who are married, where an individual that is widowed is required to be treated the same as those who are married by insurance companies. Widowers have already gone through the traumatic experience of losing their husband or wife, and the last thing that they should be concerned with is an increasing insurance rate due to the passing of a loved one.

I hope you will consider joining me in co-sponsoring this important legislation to protect widows from an unjust insurance rate increase.
