I will soon be introducing legislation to address the persistent issues related to hospital price transparency in Pennsylvania, a cause I previously championed in the House.  While current federal regulations require hospitals to post standard charges and negotiated rates for services, a 2023 study found that only half of Pennsylvania hospitals comply.  This must change.
My legislation aims to close this compliance gap and ensure patients can easily find and compare hospital prices.  Specifically, it will:
- Require hospitals to maintain and make publicly available a comprehensive list of all standard charges for their items and services, free of charge, directly on their website's homepage.
- Mandate that all prices be reported in U.S. dollars for clarity and consistency.
- Prohibit hospitals from taking collection actions or reporting patients to consumer agencies if they fail to comply with these transparency requirements.
By providing clear, accessible pricing information, we empower patients to make informed choices and foster greater competition in the healthcare marketplace.
I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this important bill, which continues our commitment to health care reform and consumer protection in Pennsylvania.
