School board members in Pennsylvania are prohibited from receiving compensation for their service, despite the significant time and effort they dedicate to their communities. These locally elected officials oversee critical responsibilities, including adopting budgets, reviewing and setting district policies, and ensuring students and staff have the resources they need to achieve educational success. Unlike other elected officials in Pennsylvania, school board members cannot be paid for their service, creating inconsistency in how public service is valued.

My legislation would repeal the prohibition on compensation for school board members, allowing each community to decide whether and how to compensate these public servants. School board members handle some of the most essential duties in local government, and their work is crucial to the success of our schools and students. By permitting compensation, we can recognize the value of their service and ensure that school board members all across Pennsylvania have the opportunity to be fairly paid for the essential work they do for our communities.

Other states allow school board members to be paid, and it is time Pennsylvania does the same. I hope you will join me in supporting and co-sponsoring this important legislation that will help our dedicated school board members across the state.
