Every day in the United States, hundreds of people from all walks of life are subjected to sexual violence. This includes rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment, all of which can have severe long-term detrimental effects on survivors. Many experience psychological effects such as depression, flashbacks, and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, approximately 20% of women in the U.S. have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lives. Additionally, nearly a quarter of men have experienced some form of sexual violence. Children, women of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community experience disproportionately higher rates of sexual violence.

To raise awareness and support survivors of sexual assault, I will be reintroducing a resolution designating April 2025 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month in Pennsylvania. This year marks the 24th anniversary of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, which was established to provide education on the prevention of sexual violence and to support survivors. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center has chosen the theme for Sexual Assault Awareness Month 2025 as “Together We Act, United We Change,” which emphasizes the importance of collective action in addressing and preventing sexual abuse, assault, and harassment.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution to promote awareness of this issue that affects many of our friends, families, and loved ones.
