Imagine if you had a common condition like high blood pressure or asthma, and you were denied health insurance coverage because of it. That is exactly what was happening before the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Back then, pre-existing conditions exclusions were common and meant that many Pennsylvanians could not access essential medical care without unnecessary burdens on their finances and health.

Now, under the ACA, the approximately 5.4 million Pennsylvanians with pre-existing conditions can get health insurance. But if the ACA disappeared, health insurers could once again deny or exclude health care coverage for pre-existing conditions like high blood pressure, asthma, cancer, and more.

That is why putting this ACA protection in state law is essential to make sure Pennsylvanians get the health care they need when they need it.
