Teachers must often participate in administrative meetings for their school or district, including IEP meetings. While these meetings may be necessary, their occurrence should never disrupt the education of our students. However, these meetings are often held during the school day and may even occur at a time when a teacher is teaching or scheduled to do so. We should not accept routine interruptions to our students’ education and instead should take steps to prevent this.

My legislation amends the Public School Code to prohibit any teacher from being required to attend such a meeting during a time that they are otherwise scheduled to teach, unless they are relieved by a qualified substitute. In some cases, learning may be suspended while a teacher attends a meeting, and this is unacceptable for our teachers and our students. Additionally, the bill would ensure that, if a meeting takes place during a teacher’s planning period, the teacher either receives compensatory pay for the planning time that was lost, or the teacher receives additional time to replace that period.

These requirements are important changes to protect the learning environment for our students as well as our teachers.

I hope you will join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to better allow teachers to perform their duties and help our students to receive uninterrupted education.
