988 is a recently developed hotline for the purpose of national suicide prevention and mental health crisis response. However, many individuals experiencing a mental health crisis may not be aware of this critical resource available to them or feel comfortable accessing it.
Our legislation would create a public education campaign within the Department of Human Services to increase public understanding and engagement with the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This campaign would include advertising in multiple languages that are culturally competent for the diverse community needs of Pennsylvania citizens. Moreover, the campaign would incorporate several advocacy groups focused on suicide prevention, including those who provide services and support to veterans and emergency responders. The campaign would not only increase awareness of 988 and other local helplines but will provide information about the warning signs of suicide and preventative measures.
Law enforcement officers many times respond to 911 calls from individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Greater awareness of 988 would redirect crisis calls away from 911 and towards appropriate mental health resources and help.
Please join us in co-sponsoring this important legislation to create a 988 public education campaign.
