In the near future, I will be reintroducing HB 274 (R. Mackenzie) from the prior session to amend the Public Works Employment Verification provisions of the Administrative Code to require all public contractors and subcontractors use the federal E-Verify system. The federal E-Verify system is a convenient way for employers to ensure that their employees do not include individuals not authorized to work in the United States, and its use is already required for construction employers who work on public contracts.

In order to apply for a public contract, public contractors and subcontractors (who have employees) would be required to submit proof of registration in the federal E-Verify system, along with the verification form required by current law.

In the 2021-22 session, legislation was adopted increase the penalties for public works construction contractors and subcontractors who fail to utilize the federal E-Verify system, including increased debarment periods from securing a public contract, and increased fines for those who fail to submit or lie on the verification form.  This legislation would simply expand the same requirements and consequences to ALL public contractors and subcontractors.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation to ensure ANY business profiting from a public contract hires workers with the authorization to work in the United States.
