In the near future I will introduce a resolution extending condolences on the passing of former President Jimmy Carter.

Coming from the small town of Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter dedicated his life to public service and the well-being of others. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in 1946, he served in the Navy as a submariner.

Upon his father’s death in 1953, he resigned his naval commission and returned to take over the family farm in Georgia. His return to Georgia saw the start of his next chapter in public service which encompassed 48 years. He started in local government and ascended to the Georgia Senate, Governor of Georgia, and President of the United States.

Domestic achievements during his presidency include establishing the Superfund Program which provided for environmental remediation, deregulating the airline industry, and creating the three new agencies in the Department of Education, Department of Energy, and Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In foreign affairs, President Carter sought to promote peace and human rights. His most notable foreign policy achievement was fostering long-term peace between Egypt and Israel through the Camp David Accords.

Following the presidency, Jimmy Carter dedicated the rest of his life to humanitarian causes. In 1982 he founded the Carter Center where he focused on promoting democracy, human rights, and eradicating disease. He was recognized for these efforts in 2002 when he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

After the longest and arguably the most productive post-presidency of any former president, Jimmy Carter passed away on December 29, 2024.

Please join me in honoring the life and achievements of President Jimmy Carter and extend condolences to his family.
