Since 1992, the City of Pittsburgh has banned practices used at rodeos, like electric prods and bucking straps, which inflict pain and cause injuries to animals. This local law effectively banned rodeos from the City and has been in place for decades.

But last summer, the General Assembly gutted Pittsburgh’s local law - swiftly and without public input - as part of the state budget deal. Mere days later, hedge fund billionaires scheduled Pittsburgh’s first rodeo in over 30 years for January 2025.

I intend to reintroduce legislation to repeal the preemption of Pittsburgh’s rodeo ban, reinstating in full the local law that has been in place for more than 30 years.

This bill was Senate Bill 412 in 2023-24 and previously co-sponsored by Senators Saval, Comitta, and Muth.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to protect both animals and the will of local governments and constituents.
