Under current Pennsylvania law, parked vehicles are required to be within 12 inches of a curb, which greatly exposes bicyclists to moving vehicles. To avoid being struck by a vehicle, individuals sometimes ride their bicycles on sidewalks, putting pedestrians at risk of injury.
In an effort to make our roads safer for bicyclists, pedestrians, and drivers, we will be introducing legislation that would authorize municipalities to create parking-protected bicycle lanes between curbs and parked vehicles, essentially providing bicyclists with a dedicated lane away from vehicular traffic.
Studies have shown that parking-protected bicycle lanes: 1) reduce injuries and deaths resulting from vehicle-bicycle collisions, 2) promote healthy lifestyles by increasing bicycle ridership, and 3) increase safety for pedestrians.
Please join us in support of this important legislation aimed at making our roads safer for all who use them.
