As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more prevalent in our daily lives, we must also be aware that scammers and other bad actors can use this technology to spread false information and defraud Pennsylvanians. AI is undoubtedly a powerful tool that can boost productivity and improve efficiency; however, in the wrong hands, it can have a negative impact on people’s reputation, security, and livelihood. Additionally, the growing sophistication of AI is making it more difficult for people to easily identify AI generated content, causing more people to be susceptible to AI-related scams. Therefore, I believe the General Assembly has the responsibility to address these issues and ensure protections are in place when consumers are viewing fake content created by AI.

That is why I will be re-introducing legislation that will require a disclosure on all AI generated content, including images, audio, video, and text used for the sale of consumer goods. This disclaimer would ensure transparency by giving consumers the information they need to make informed decisions and not be misled. Simply put, if it is AI then it has to say it is AI.  We cannot allow a future where people are unaware if they are interacting with a computer program or another person.  This legislation was formerly introduced and passed as House Bill 1598 with significant bi-partisan support last session.

Everyone deserves the right to know when the content they consume is generated by AI. With that in mind, I ask that you join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to better inform Pennsylvanians and provide much needed transparency as AI content is produced in the future. Thank you for protecting Pennsylvanians as we begin to navigate the unknown waters that AI is creating.
