I intend to introduce legislation designating the southern section of the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway in Monroe Township and Shamokin Dam Borough, Snyder County, as the Joseph McGranaghan Memorial Highway.

A true public servant, Joe was a councilman in Chambersburg for four years, prior to moving to Shamokin Dam.  He then served for 20 years as a councilman of Shamokin Dam Borough before becoming Mayor in 2009, a position he held until his unexpected passing at the age of 81 on August 3, 2024.

Joe also served as President of the Susquehanna Industrial Development Corporation and President of the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. Additionally, he chaired the Chamber’s Transportation Committee, as well as the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway Task Force, an organization comprised of elected officials and community volunteers.  During his time leading the Task Force, Joe was instrumental in securing funding for the Routes 11 & 15 bypass project, which is referred to as the Central Susquehanna Valley Thruway, hence the choice of naming a portion of the thruway in his memory.

Professionally, Joe was the President and Chief Operating Officer of Sunbury Broadcasting Corporation and then President of its Media Services Division. Early in his career he served as General Manager of the corporation’s radio stations, WKOK-AM and WKOK-FM, and even after his retirement from the company in 2008, Joe continued to host a very popular public affairs call-in show called “On the Mark.”

Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation to honor the life and public service of Mr. Joseph McGranaghan.
